1932 was the beginning of the Great Depression; it was an extraordinarily difficult time for most. For the very fortunate few however, opulence was still affordable. Automobile manufacturers like Duessenberg, Packard, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz and others were still building very expensive motorcars. In fact, the Packard Motorcar Co. hedged its bets and built even more opulent cars in the early to mid ‘30’s.
In October of 1932 Rolls-Royce displayed its new car at the Paris Auto Show.
The car was ordered to be built, Barker having been hired to perform the coachwork. The chassis number on the car was 50MS. The car was ordered in Black over Brown leather and was placed on the Rolls-Royce display stand at the Paris Auto Show on October 6, 1932.
This car:
This very car, chassis Nr. 50MS is that car. This Phantom II stood on the Rolls-Royce stand from October 6, 1932 to October 16, 1932. While being displayed, the car was purchased by the Pasha of Marrakech and after the Paris show was delivered to him at the Hotel Claridge on the Champs Ely Sees, Paris in November of 1932.
We fell in love with this motorcar. Its lines are graceful, the very long hood and sweeping fenders make this particular Barker bodied car, in the opinion of many and us, one of the best looking cars of its time; most certainly one of the best looking Phantom II’s of its era.
What may make the car even more appealing to us, is that the car is remarkably original and un-restored, even the mascot is original to this car. The doors still close like fine cabinets, remarkable, given that the body and door frames are built of Ash. The interior wood in nearly perfect and though the car shows a nice patina and some wear, this would certainly be expected after some 75 years.
Unbelievably, the car is available for sale.
Enjoy!
